The Turkmen of Central Asia are renowned weavers known in particular for their tent-bags and animal trappings. This torba, or shallow tent-bag is the work of a Tekke Turkmen weaver. It is complete and retains its ornamental tassels at its bottom. Tekke weavings like this are particularly finely woven, which allows for a precision of detail which is seldom rivaled. This piece makes use of the iconic 'gul' or repeat medallion format associated with Tekke torbas. Interestingly, this is a nine gul piece which is scarcer than the more typical six gul or even twelve gul type. Collection of Val Arbab
