Nim Suzani

Mid 19th C.
Uzbekistan
DESCRIPTION:

This ‘Nim’ Suzani was embroidered in the ancient Central Asian caravan city of Bukahra. The word ‘nim’ literally means ‘half’ and refers to smaller suzanis from any region of Central Asia. A classic lattice design is drawn throughout the ground of this small happy piece—each cell containing a separate flowering blossom or palmette. While stylized carnations may be seen scattered through the field and border areas, the majority of the floral ornament drawn are more fantastic, emanating from the long repertoire of embroidered design of the region. The vibrant colors of these floral bursts, as well as the green vegetal tracery, is amplified by the use of a true white ground. Collection of Sam Barakat
