Karadagh

Late 19th C
Northwest Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Using soft superior wool and vibrant vegetal dyes, this intriguing runner from Northwest Persia combines the elegance of the finest of Persian weavings with a dynamic tribal aesthetic. Against a deep and modulating indigo ground, silhouettes of delicate stylized shrubs are illuminated in contrasting white. These stylized shrubs are derived from Persian woolen and silk textiles of the eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries. Several varieties form playful bands throughout the field, which is punctuated at the top and bottom by a row of two geometric 'ashik' motifs, a favorite of Shahsevan tribal weavers. The main border draws linked budding pin-wheel ornament, perhaps deriving from classical Caucasian embroidery, but it is imbued here with a quality that seems almost zoomorphic.
