Khamseh

Late 19th C
South Persian Tribal
DESCRIPTION:

The weavers of the south Persian Khamseh tribal confederation are mainly known for their small domestic weavings: bags, trappings and scatter rugs. Runners and main carpets are far less common. This exceptional runner combines the fine weave of a bag face with a delicate striped pattern, which was borrowed from a textile design. The wool of this piece is lustrous and an absolute tactile delight. The vibrant, polychromatic blue ground border, traced with an abstract and minimal pomegranate design, is particularly compelling. This border, flanked by two golden guard borders, surrounds a multi striped central ground. The result is a triumph of color, texture and design. Property of a Massachussets collector.
