Oushak

Late 19th C
Turkey
DESCRIPTION:

This Turkish Oushak carpet draws large scale motifs against a muted khaki ground. The town of Ushak in the Aegean region of western Anatolia has been a weaving center for centuries. This piece reflects a phase in the history of these weavings when the importance of the international market was paramount. Though also woven for the domestic Ottoman market, carpets such as this were frequently exported to the West, where their bold design fit perfectly with the European style at the turn of the century. Interestingly, the vegetal forms drawn in the field and borders of this rug can be traced back to Ottoman workshop rugs of the 17th century.
