Khotan

Late 20th Century
Turkey
DESCRIPTION:

This contemporary carpet is a modern rendering of Khotan design from the 18th century. Khotan carpets are known for their distinct blend of classical Chinese and local elements from East Turkestan, now the north western autonomous province of Xinjiang in China. The repeat 'magic mountain' design of the outermost border and the fret corner pieces of the field are borrowed directly from Kangxi era (1661-1722) carpet design. The three large medallions on a red ground are from models from East Turkestan. The designers of this piece have rendered these medallions and their inner workings with emphasis on curvilinear drawing, which is thought to be an earlier 18th century aesthetic.
