Lavar Kirman

Late 19th C
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Situated in the remote southeast of Persia, Kerman is as close to the Indian sub-continent as it is to the carpet producing regions of Northwest Persia. This majestic piece is not only colored with Indian lac but is also infused with a distinctly Indian aesthetic. A variety of flowering trees and shrubs create a magical opulent field, similar in feeling to the mille fleur carpets of the Mughal era (1526-1857). A host of animals are interspersed throughout the field, along with dervishes, mythical beasts, and riders on horseback. Much of the imagery seen here, including the animal combat, has an ancient history in Persian iconography, and may be traced to classical Safavid art of the 16th and 17th centuries. The grand border of this carpets draws royal hunters on horseback within traditional Persian vine-scroll and palmette design.
