Kashan

C. 1920
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Kashan, an oasis city in arid central Persia, has been a center for silk production for centuries. With greater access to wool in the 19th century, a carpet industry began to flourish. This classic Kashan carpet has the elegance of a fine textile with the durable weave of the best Persian urban carpets. A central medallion is drawn against a rich burgundy ground, surrounded by blossoming palmettes and floral bursts. The sinuous contours of the corner pieces define an elegant cartouche shape the field. In fine Persian style, the border is composed of a repeat palmette surrounded by garlands.
