Fereghan Sarouk

c. 1900
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

A classic Persian lobed medallion, with the contours of an elongated eight pointed pendant, is elegantly drawn in large scale with contrasting ivory and indigo in the center of this Fereghan Sarouk carpet. This medallion type may ultimately be traced back to Safavid Persian prototypes of the 16th century. The medallion is surrounded by a soft rose ground field tracing a network of vine-scroll culminating in burst of several pleasing forms of flowers. Contrasting corner-pieces are sinuously drawn in a shade of blue-green somewhere between a slate and a turquoise. The piece is framed by a deep indigo border which perfectly complements that of the central medallion.
