Isfahan

Early 20th Century
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

The Persian city of Isfahan has a carpet weaving tradition stretching as far back as at least the 16th century, when Shah Abbas I (r. 1588-1629) moved the imperial capital to this ancient city. Classical Isfahan carpets, such as the Polonaise production of the 17th century, generally exhibit opulent allover designs. This early 20th century piece maintains the elegance and opulence of earlier pieces, as it draws elegant blossoming arabesque vine scroll throughout. a circular sixteen-pointed medallion centers the rug.
