DESCRIPTION:

This contemporary carpet is a happy and faithful reproduction of one of the most celebrated classical Safavid era (1501-1722) Persian carpets, The Joseph Lees Williams Memorial Collection 'Tree Carpet' in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The museum piece currently measures approximately 17x11 feet, but when it was woven more than four hundred years ago it was originally twice as long. This piece is based on the current proportions of the classical example and draws a combination of cypress and blossoming prunus trees against a rich red ground. The border is fantastic, and represents a 16th century design found in both carpets and illuminated manuscripts which combines stylized lilies and palmettes within a colorful interlace.
