Kashan

20th C. (2nd Q)
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Kashan, in south central Persia, has historically been a center for silk production and dyeing. Begining in the second half of the 19th century, when Kashan weavers gained access to stable supplies of wool, a large carpet weaving industry prospered well into the 20th century. This Kashan carpet draws a formal Persian medallion with corner pieces within a contoured ruby red ground. A host of classic Persian vegetal ornament is drawn throughout.
