This vintage modernist carpet represents the nascent phase of carpet weaving in Nepal in the 1970s. Woven by refugee Tibetan weavers, this unique carpet blends elements of Art Deco with French modernism. Individual pieces like this were one off attempts at supplying the Western market with hand-woven alternatives to machine made European production. Inferior quality production in neighboring India and Pakistan laid the foundation for the more mechanized contemporary Nepali carpet industry.
