Serapi

19th C (4th Q)
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Great Serapi carpets are renowned for their bold graphic qualities, which integrate a unique sense of drama. This fine Serapi was woven in the Heriz district of Northwest Persia. A central medallion floats against a madder red ground with light slate blue corner pieces. Full blossoms and palmettes are expertly articulated and balanced within an elongated field. These field proportions allow for an absolutely magical border rendered in grand scale: Against a deep indigo ground, giant palmettes and swirling blossoms are organically drawn in saturated color. The result is a rare but fantastic take on a classic design.
