Shirvan

19th C (4th Q)
Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

This Leshghi star design carpet is a rare large size for Shirvan weavings. Woven in eastern Azerbaijan near the Caspian coast, Shirvan rugs are known for their fine weave and precise drawing. Leshghi stars are named for a north Caucasian people who were initially thought to have woven most pieces with the design. The range for the design, however, extends throughout the Caucasus region as far south as areas of Persia. Most Leshghi design carpets fall within the Shirvan and Kuba spectrum. While the stars of this piece alternate regularly in color, each is individuated by small features of drawing. Similarly, the indigo field is punctuated by a series of Caucasian folk weaving elements such as latch-hook diamonds, 'boteh' paisleys and even small white accenting dots.
