Luri rug

c. 1900
Southwest Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Woven in southwest Persia, this Luri rug incorporates regional drawing shared with Qashqai groups. Three large red latch hook diamonds are traced against a deep indigo blue field. Each is filled with a variety of geometric elements. Interestingly, unlike most Qashqai rugs of this type, no one element is perfectly centered within the diamonds. Rather, within each, a cruciform element containing an inner eight-pointed star hovers just off center. Other geometric elements are scattered throughout. Similar geometric elements are drawn across the indigo field with the addition of elongated leaves and 'boteh' paisleys. The Thomas D. Cook family collection
