Using organic drawing to render largely geometric motifs, this sumak side panel was woven in the Moghan region of the Caucasus. Three octagons are traced with rams' horn motif, which extend from both the top and bottom of each across the entire horizontal span of the piece. A small cruciform element is drawn in the center of each medallion, and is flanked by abstracted foliage evocative of zoomorphic elements. While elongated geometric elements float within the sky-blue field, stylized birds with elongated plumage are drawn in the top and bottom borders.
