Tibetan rug

Late 19th C
Tibet
DESCRIPTION:

Tibetan rugs are renowned for their thick, dense, yet soft and supple Himalayan wool. This piece does not disappoint. Against a pleasant rose-madder ground this Tibetan rug draws three multi-petaled blossoms layering gold, green, and red with hints of blue and cream. Stylized scholars' scrolls derived from Chinese iconography are used as corner-pieces while colorful abstract cloud devices are drawn linked in the border. The lotus blossom serves as a symbol of enlightenment in Buddhist iconography so perhaps this piece is making reference to both spiritual wisdom and academic erudition?
