Serapi

19th C (4th Q)
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

This extraordinary Serapi carpet blends purity of design with palatial scale. In the spirit of the very best weavings from the Heriz district of Northwest Persia, bold drawing and an underlying serene elegance are perfectly balanced. Spacing is open and sublime. The Serapi design sensibility, in keeping with that of traditional Persian and other Oriental carpets, does not stress exact symmetry but instead a more ethereal sense of balance which encompasses an organic notion of growth. While paired with similar motifs both side to side and top to bottom, no two blossoms or palmettes are exactly the same. Indeed, even the central medallion is weighted and showis variation in petal size and articulation as well as color modulation. This is one of the best Serapi carpets we have carried and one of the very few top pieces of the genre available on the market today. Collection of Lieselott Wiendieck, purchased by her father in Germany in the early 20th century.
