Residing in the remote southeast of Persia, Afshar tribal weavers seem to have been less susceptible to the changes affecting rug weaving during the early 20th century. This cheerful Afshar rug uses the same distinctively Afshar vegetal palette seen in earlier pieces. Familiar shrubs are drawn throughout the contoured ogival field and corner-pieces. This distinct two medallion format seems to have become more popular within the Afshar design repertoire at the turn of the century. An unusual and very pleasing detail is the inclusion of pairs of small birds drawn throughout the main border.
