Using a classic 19th century Persian central medallion format, this small elegant Fereghan Sarouk is a woven gem. Rich and dramatic foliage is drawn throughout the field. The light ground serves to heighten the sense of color, and it contrasts well both with the rose medallion and the blue corner pieces. The corner pieces are particularly interesting in this piece, as they are a light modulated indigo at one end and a dark indigo tone at the other. A similar 'abrash,' or modulation of color, may be seen in the alternating darker and lighter rose madder tones of the medallion. This emphasis on color modulation, using natural dyes to break monotony, is a hallmark of great traditional Persian carpets.
