Yomut ensi rug

19th C (4th Q)
Turkmen
DESCRIPTION:

An ensi, or door flap rug, is one of the most iconic of the many varieties of Turkmen domestic weaving from Central Asia. Woven for the nomads' yurts, the central cruciform of the ensi is thought by scholars to recall the carved panels of Central Asian wooden doors. This ensi was woven by the Yomut Turkmen and draws small crenelated geometric forms, knowns as the 'ashik' motif, within the four panels of the field as well as within several borders. The central border draws a curled-leaf variant most likely adapted by the Turkmen from Persian prototypes. The bottom panel or 'elem' draws to layers of stylized trees.
