Kazak

c. 1900
Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

Most Kazak rugs can be sorted into a host of known design types. This piece breaks the mold. Woven with a distinctive blue ground, the field draws a double-niche traced in serrated gold outlining. A red lattice of the type seen in neighboring Shirvan rugs of the east Caucasus is drawn with large scale and open spacing in keeping with the graphic boldness for which great Kazaks are known. Stylized flowers are drawn within the cells of the lattice as distinctive quadrupeds are placed along with a host of geometric ornamentation in each corner.
