Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Against an indigo field, with tones of blue and aubergine, this exceptional Mahal carpet draws an allover large scale lattice pattern derived from the Persian 'Herati pattern' design. Similarly, the deep ochre border draws an abstract rendering of a classic Persian palmette border type, with an emphasis on large scale and open space. Such an aesthetic is reminiscent of the contemporaneous Arts and Crafts movement, and this affinity most likely accounts for these carpets' popularity in the West, particularly Britain, at the end of the 19th century. While this is certainly a workshop piece, its stellar saturated color and artistry of design are in keeping with less formal Persian village rugs of the era.
