This graphically energetic Kuba rug from the east Caucasus demonstrates the simple but dynamic aesthetic of 19th century village weaving. Rows of small boteh paisleys shimmer against a vibrant white ground. Far from static and monotonous, each row is different utilizing both subtle and dramatic shifts in color, size, shape, and direction. Likewise, the sides and borders are animated with 'abrash', traditional color modulation, as well as with various playful eccentricities of drawing .
