This Bakhtiari carpet draws a large niche within red spandrels. Directional Persian carpets of this large a size are quite rare but the grand scale of this piece does provide for magical potentials. Flowering trees blossom with a variety of plumage and buds illuminating the indigo ground. A pair of peacocks crown the treetops. Large carpets such as this are often known as Khan carpets and it is thought that they were woven as presentation pieces for people of status. Natural camel wool pile is used in the border affirming the tribal roots of the Bakhtiari weavers of this piece.
