Bidjar Rug

c. 1900
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Great Bidjar carpets are known for their delicate drawing and hardy construction. This elegant example draws a fine all-over design of foliage and blossoms arranged around jewel-like central rosettes within a lattice grid. This arrangement is known as the "Herati pattern" as legend dictates that it was first conceived of in that eastern Persian city before travelling and being copied throughout the Persian empire during the 18th and 19th centuries. A classic contoured Persian central medallion floats in the middle of the field as the all-over design gives way to a ruby-red ground. Colors are deep, natural and saturated illuminating highlights in aquamarine, pistachio, and gold. A narrow rendition of a classic Persian linked palmette border frames the piece.
