Seichour Kuba vase rug

19th C (4th Q)
Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

Vase or potted flower imagery depicted in carpets emerged as early as the 16th century with the celebrated 'vase carpets' of Kerman. These pieces often drew a variety of lush foliage emanating from planted vases, symbolizing a notion of a portable garden of paradise. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, this imagery remained a popular theme for Persian weavers and within the repertoire of Persian decorative arts in general. This small Caucasian rug belongs to a genre of 19th century Kuba weaving that emphasized the actual vases while abstracting their floral content. Colors are lively and vivid with all three primary colors represented with the addition of green and classic Kuba rose.
