Central Anatolian kilim

c. 1700
Turkey
DESCRIPTION:

This exceptional early Anatolian kilim draws three distinct sections. Colorful energetic bands of ornament, using both wool and cotton white, are drawn on the top and bottom of a vivid canary gold field. The sides are open and free of any border. Four rows of six octagons, centered with large latch-hooks, are spaciously drawn against this vibrant ground. Perhaps coincidentally, the central field of this Konya kilim seems reminiscent of the celebrated 14th century pile carpet found in the Sultan Alaadin Keykubat Tomb in Konya. This may demonstrate a cultural continuum for Konya area weaving going back several hundred years.
