Fereghan Sarouk rug

Late 19th C
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

Fereghan Sarouk carpets from central Persia comprise a diversity of quality and elegance. While few if any can be described as coarse, still fewer are as refined as this exceptional example. A classic Persian medallion drawn in ivory floats against an extremely rare un-dyed camel hair ground. Sinuous tendrils of vine-scroll culminate in a variety of colorful flowers and blossoms. The exacting weave allows for a clarity of curvilinear design seldom seen in other Fereghan pieces. Spacing is perfect allowing for a balance between ornament and background. Framing the field, the main border links verdant palmettes and flowering branches, the deep indigo ground of the border contrasting adeptly with the medallion. While Fereghan Sarouk and other Persian pieces of the late 19th century often reflect the international neoclassical aesthetics of the era, there is an extra intangible quality present here that suggests that this was a very special commission for a domestic patron.
