Using spectacular saturated color and an adept weave, this gold ground Marasali prayer rug draws an assortment of flowering plants arranged within an over-all lattice in the classic east Caucasian manner. Chevrons and diamonds are formed across the field with the use of white creating an extra level of contrast and design while complementing the white main border and 'mihrab' arch. Stylized 'boteh' paisleys of the distinctive Marasali variety are drawn in these last two devices using saturated madder red, green, several blues, and even ud-dyed natural camel wool. The piece is inscribed with the date 1302 at two places flanking the top left and right side of the mihrab niche, corresponding with Western year 1884.
