Shahsevan Sumak bagface

Caucasus
DESCRIPTION:

This iconic sumak bag from the Moghan-Savlan region of the Caucasus draws a stylized eight-pointed device against a deep indigo field. Bags with this design are often called "bug bags" or "beetle bags" by collectors because of their zoomorphic appearance. The origin of the design is probably more complex and their may even be a relationship with the lobed medallions of classical Northwest Persian medallion carpets of the 16th and 17th centuries. The octagons of the four corners as well as the center recall Anatolian 'Holbein' traditions of design. This example uses exceptional color with a truly pleasing modulated blue-green border, vibrant madder red, and hints of gold.
