Bakhshaish

19th C (4th Q)
Persia
DESCRIPTION:

This colorful and verdant Bakhshaish carpet draws several varieties of trees, including cedars and willows, against an ivory ground, much in the manner of Northwest Persian garden carpet variants of the 18th century. The shorter format of this piece combined with a lighter palette of rose, pale blue, and green—as well as the inclusion of animals—adds a further layer and favourable comparison with Northwest Persian landscape carpets. Of particular interest are the innermost borders— composed of linked roses in the manner of Bidjar carpets, terminating at the bottom and lower sides of the field. This creates what perhaps might be termed a 'pseudo-niche,' and emphasizes the directional nature of the drawing.
