This dramatic Afshar bagface draws a solitary large scale crenelated winged motif, more typically seen as part of a smaller-scale allover repeat pattern in small Afshar rugs. Here the perimeters of the various sections of the ornament are traced with a variety of smaller repeat devices. Though the field is almost completely filled by the large multifaceted motif, four stylized flowering plants, of the type found in the borders of classical Northwest Persian carpets of the 16th and 17th century, are drawn in each corner.
