Kazak rugs are renowned for their bold, almost atavistic geometry. As demonstrated by this graphic antique Kazak, this aesthetic survived well into the 19th century. Two shield medallions, the bottom a deep indigo and the top a lighter free-blue, are drawn against a madder-red ground. Layers of reciprocal borders frame the field creating a distinct sense of movement.
