Qashqai Bagface

Qashqai weavers of southwest Persia are known for their iconic knotted pile animal bag faces featuring large central diamonds traced with white latch-hook or rams’ horn ornament. Color is superlative in this example which uses a saturated double-dyed green ground as opposed to the more common blue-ground variant. A lighter green is used in portions of the four ‘Memling guls’ drawn in each of the corners as well as four latch-hook diamond elements extending from the central white rosette. Interestingly, the weft of this piece uses both wool as well as purple silk.
