This square Indian Agra carpet was woven in the end of the nineteenth century when India was a part of the British Empire. Most Agra carpets from this period are known for their persianate array of palmettes and vine-scrolls against deep red grounds. This piece, however, is clearly informed by European design. Interestingly, a French model, probably an Aubusson one, was used. The sense of color, particularly the deep red, green and yellow, are particularly Agra.
