Agra rug

This elegant, oversized carpet from northern India rotates ruby-red rows of hexagons with glittering white diamonds. These jewel-like hues combined with precision of execution and a high attention to detail recall the fineness and luxury of seventeenth and eighteenth century pieces from India’s Mughal past. Perhaps surprisingly, though, at least two motifs from the border have been borrowed from contemporaneous models of neighboring weaving cultures: the linked octagon design originating in southern Persia and the accompanying leaf design from Anatolia.
