Hooked rugs are crafted by pulling loops of yarn or sometimes fabric through a stiff woven base usually made of burlap or linen. Rug hooking as a folk art has been practiced in the United States since colonial times, most frequently on the eastern seaboard and particularly in New England. This piece is distinctive for its large size and employs a garlanded medallion. Clusters of roses and foliage are drawn both at the center of this medallion and throughout the field in this fine example of American folk art.
