Tapestries have been woven in the area of Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France from the seventeenth century. This turn of the century piece with its sparse floral design and multiple perspectives on the same figures is indicative of the change in western taste during this period. Simple floral cuttings are spaciously drawn against a cream field and framed by a dark, narrow border. This piece is suitable for the floor or would make an elegant wall-hanging as well.
Provenance: ex William Coury collection.
