Bakhtiari gabbeh rug

This semi-antique Bakhtiari Gabbeh from western Persia uses many of the geometries and spatial relationships of formal Persian carpets but reinterprets them with an almost modernist sense of color and abstraction to form a completely new and vital aesthetic. The central medallion has been turned into a purely geometric form flanked on four sides by cubes of color. Similarly, layers of the three primary colors articulating sections generally reserved for medallion and corner-pieces are layered in the field. The border, composed of small reciprocal diamonds preserves a sense of movement and acts as the perfect geometric frame for this vivid composition.
