This long main carpet was woven in one of several possible oasis towns along the Oxus River of Central Asia in what is now Uzbekistan. During the second half of the nineteenth century, Turkmen weavers from then recently settled groups began weaving for the larger Central Asian market. This carpet takes many motifs known from generations prior within the repertoire of Turkmen weaving ornament but borrows heavily from the more Perisianate traditions of sedentary Central Asia. The result is a distinct and pleasing synthesis of tribal and sedentary traditions which is inherently Central Asian.
