Bessarabian Kilim

Utilizing both Ottoman and European aesthetics and modes, this Besserabian flatweave was woven in the northeast of the country by the Black Sea either very close to or in the area now that is Moldova. The dark ground recalls weavings from Karabagh in the Caucasus while the bouquets of roses reflect the French taste prevalent throughout the Russian empire at this time.
