The thick depressed warp weave of Bidjar rugs is well known making them perhaps the sturdiest of antique Persian carpets. Less well understood sometimes, is the design origins of this group. Bijar is located in the east of Iranian Kurdistan. While many Bidjar carpets simply use local renditions of contemporaneous Persian design, others, such as this example, reflect an older tradition harkening back to postclassical Northwest Persian regional design of the 18th century which remained particularly strong throughout Kurdistan. This Bidjar carpet faithfully draws an 18th century garden carpet design composed of cedars, prunus blossoms, and willow branches. Color is diverse and saturated . This piece is framed by a classic Bidjar border system of flowering vine-scroll.
