This magnificent textile was made by a master weaver, who had at her fingertips the technical excellence and Diné aesthetic as well as the philosophical acuity to create a textile exemplifying hózhó. Hózhó, a philosophic principle tied to beauty, balance, order, harmony, health, and symmetry. It is foundational in Diné thought and practice, and is often said to be the closest concept of “art” in a weaver’s original language. The weaver adds fields of active tension in serrated designs and alternate orienting geometric shapes, then balances these active spaces with calm fields of grounded rectangles and bands. The textile is symmetric, the designs evenly placed, and the all-over composition creates a harmonic whole.
Wool and dye (natural and synthetic)
