Ghazan Sarouk rug

Woven with lustrous Manchester wool, this elegant central Persian Ghazan Sarouk rug draws a stylized floral field against a soft rose-red ground. During the early 20th century the soft color palette used here became popular among a variety of weavings known as Sarouk. The stylized palmettes of the field along with the leaf and palmette border go back to classical prototypes of the 16th and 17th centuries but have been rendered here in a Persian neoclassical style. The piece is repeatedly signed ‘Ghazan’ in ornamental calligraphy throughout the brick-red guard borders.
