This over-sized, central Persian Josheghan carpet retains the grace and charm of smaller Persian village weavings. Both the field and corner-pieces as well as sections of the central medallion are composed of a combination of willow trees and flowering branches placed within a lattice of quatrefoil vegetal design. Such motifs were most probably derived from Northwest Persian garden carpets of the eighteenth century in which they appear in a more regimented naturalistic configuration. Similar flowering branches are found in the border of this piece combined with smaller-scale, classic Persian-type palmettes. The result is a composition accented with soft jewel-like tones that recalls the verdant bounty of Persian gardens and weavings inspired by them.
