Melding formal models with Caucasian folk traditions, this Karabagh long rug reinterprets classical Persian medallion carpet design within the narrow format of a runner. A column of alternating medallions float against a deep indigo ground. While the internal drawing of each medallion type has been transformed from more curvilinear arabesque structures to angular geometry or simple floral rosettes, the central medallion in particular, remains faithful to classical models. Large birds are happily drawn in a strikingly informal manner throughout the piece. These animals along with the floral border, the later derived from French models, suggest an Armenian weaver.
