Woven with soft lustrous wool, this Karapinar area rug demonstrates the tenacity of classical Anatolian design. While most likely woven at around the turn of the century in south central Anatolia, the field of this piece depicts a diamond type formulated in classical western Anatolian pieces, in either Ushak or Bergama, as early as the 17th century. Its survival here in a village piece several centuries later and geographically further east is intriguing, but certainly not unheard of. The border represents a local central Anatolian floral variety.
Condition Report
Much of the lighter green has been re-knotted, suggesting that it may have originally been a synthetic color.
