Kashgar, an ancient Silk Road oasis town in the Tarim Basin, is currently located in the far west of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China near the border with two Central Asian Republics. The people of this region are largely Turkic speaking Muslims and the traditional art and architecture reflects an amalgam of Central Asian, Middle Eastern, and Chinese influences. This Kashgar carpet draws an all-over field composed of flowering blossoms within a lattice, a design type seen in several Central Asian and East Turkestan weaving groups. Six border variants frame the piece reflecting Chinese, Central Asian, as well as local types.
